The Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 Canadian Paralympic Team projects marked the latest in an ongoing collaboration between the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and EllisDon Infrastructure Services and Technology (EDIST).

Tokyo 2020: Canadian Paralympic Team Project

The EDIST team worked in collaboration with the CPC to operate the facility in the village where 128 Canadian Paralympians resided during the games. Although the games themselves lasted only two weeks, a full 18 months were spent in preparation. A team of six, consisting of members of EllisDon Facilities Services (EDFS) and EllisDon Furniture, Equipment & Design (FED) team traveled to Tokyo and provided a host of services, including:

• Concierge support.
• Games scheduling.
• Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (“FF&E”) space planning.
• Database management.
• Inventory management.
• Village Space pre- and post-occupancy inspection services.

Beijing 2022: Canadian Paralympic Team Project

A team comprising of members from EDFS and FED undertook months of preparation before traveling to Beijing to provide the 48-member Canadian team with a host of services over the course of the two-week duration of the games. These services included:

• Pre- and post-occupancy inventory and inspections services.
• On-site operations and maintenance technical expertise.
• Concierge support.
• Signage strategy and implementation.
• Space planning and inventory management.
• Procurement and logistics.

The EDIST team worked in tandem with the CPC to ensure that members of the Canadian Paralympic Team had everything they needed during their stay, from the time of their arrival until the moment of their departure. Services performed in the meantime dealt with everything from specific accessibility needs, furniture needs, and securing suitable room layouts, to dealing with COVID-19 restrictions/safety measures and language issues. Pre/post-games inspections of the building were conducted to ensure it was left in the same condition as it was found.

While many months of pre-planning took place, parameters evolved and changes often took place during the games. Drawing on its past experience on the Athletes Village for the 2015 PanAm/ParaPanAm Games in Toronto, as well as tools, expertise, lessons learned, from projects across other market sectors, EDIST was able to quickly adapt to changes as they occurred and provide solutions and improvements to CPC’s processes and facility operations. In effect, EDIST created and operated an exceptional environment for the paralympic athletes, which enabled them to completely focus on their game.
